Trains to Machu Picchu 2026: Complete Guide to Services and Prices

Traveling to the Inca citadel is the dream of many, but when planning the trip in 2026, the big question is always the same: Which train should I choose? With so many options, schedules, and different names, it can be confusing.
Don't worry. We have prepared this updated guide so you understand the real differences between PeruRail and Inca Rail, and know exactly what to expect from each service according to your budget and travel style.
⚠️ Important Note: The Rainy Season January - April.
If you are traveling between January 1st and April 30th, 2026, you will notice that there are no train departures directly from the city of Cusco. This is normal and is done for safety and track maintenance during the rainy season.
During these months, the Bimodal Service (Bus + Train) operates. It works as follows:
- Private Bus: You take a bus from the train company at Wanchaq Station (Cusco), which will take you to Ollantaytambo (approx. 1 hour and 45 min).
- Train: In Ollantaytambo, you transfer to the train that will finally take you to Machu Picchu Pueblo (approx. 1 hour and 30 min).
It's a great option! You arrive comfortably by bus through the Sacred Valley and then enjoy the railway scenery.
1. For the Practical Traveler: Economic and Comfortable Option
If your priority is optimizing your budget to spend on experiences or food, these are the ideal options. You don't sacrifice comfort, but you do without unnecessary luxuries.
- PeruRail Expedition: It is the classic train for adventure. The decoration is inspired by Inca culture. It features standard-sized windows and onboard snack sales service. It is perfect if you are looking for a functional and cheerful trip.
- Inca Rail The Voyager: It offers very comfortable seats and wide windows. Its great differentiator is the Latin American background music that accompanies the journey. On some selected schedules, you might enjoy a small performance of the "Ollantay" drama on board.
Which one to choose? Both offer a very similar service. We recommend deciding based on the schedule that best fits your itinerary.
2. For Landscape Lovers: Panoramic Option
This is the travelers' favorite category. If you want to take the best photos for your social media and feel immersed in nature, it is worth investing a little more here.
- PeruRail Vistadome: Its main attraction is its panoramic windows that wrap around the car, even on the roof, allowing a total connection with the landscape. The return trip is a party: it includes an alpaca fashion show and a live Saqra dance.
- Tip: There is a version called Vistadome Observatory, which adds a bar car with an open-air balcony, ideal for breathing the pure air of the Andes.
- Inca Rail The 360°: As its name implies, it is a taller and wider train designed for total observation. It features an open-air observatory car in the center of the train. In addition, it offers USB ports to charge your devices (something vital nowadays) and an entertainment app on board.
3. For a Special Occasion: Luxury and Exclusivity
If you are celebrating a honeymoon or an anniversary, these options transform the transfer into a world-class experience.
- Hiram Bingham (Belmond): More than a train, it is a palace on rails inspired by the 1920s. Includes gourmet brunch or dinner, open bar, live music, and, very importantly, includes the bus up to the citadel and the entrance to Machu Picchu.
- Inca Rail The First Class: Offers a gourmet menu, cocktail bar, live music, and an observatory balcony. It is an intimate and sophisticated experience with top-level personalized service.
